WestLake FREEZE

This is just raw footage of the Westlake Mall freeze. This project was really fun to do. The original idea of freezing for about 10 to even 15 minutes did not happen because as a group when we were doing our practice, we barely could make it all the way through our frozen position for more than 5 minutes. That day was a bit cold and breezy and during the freeze I know my eyes were watering but we endured it all the way. As we were going to the location, the thought in my mind was are we even going to get any reaction at all. But after watching the different footages, it was really awesome that we got that kind of a reaction to our project. The classic double take reaction, to people taking pictures, and even giving comments like "I've seen this on Youtube before" were very good reactions from people. I would say it was a successful class project.

I recorded my motorcycle starting up and idling and then revving it up. a few times i revved it up then i just looped the revving sounds a few times. Most of the time the motorcycle is idling.

Graffiti

Random video I picked out from youtube about graffiti, well actually I really liked the background music. All the videos about graffitis that were shown in class were very informative and also one of the groups did their project about graffiti as well. I was aware of tagging but did not really know about bombing and splashing, these were new vocabulary for me. Graffiti in the form of markers, brushes, spray paint, and even stickers...I see graffiti as art. One thing that stuck with me from one of the video that we viewed in class was that graffiti should remain in the streets for all to see. It should not be restricted to museums and art galleries where you have to pay to see it. Another video I remember was the graffiti removal video. This was also a form of art. I agree with this also. Who is to say what art is or is not. Art is everywhere.

400 Pages of FBI Files-- Kit Bakke

On Thursday, November 6, 2008, I had the privilege of listening to an author by the name of Kit Bakke. She talked about her book "Miss Alcott's E-mail". The book is about a correspondence between Kit Bakke from the present time and a Civil War era woman named Louisa May Alcott. Mrs. Bakke was inspired to write about Louisa because their lives were similar. Both were activist in some ways, both were nurses, and both women wanted to contribute to try to make a change. The hour or so of time was spent talking about three topics, Louisa's World, Kit's World, and the Writer's world. The one thing that struck me about Louisa was during the Women's Suffrage, she was the first ever woman from her area/town to register to vote for a school board election. Also the fact that she grew up in the neighborhood, or practically neighbors with many great literary minds like Fuller, Emerson, Thoreau, and Hawthorne she became a writer herself. In fact they were all close family friends. She also had to deal with mercury poisoning. With the life of Kit Bakke being a political activist (Vietnam War) back in the 1960's, she accumulated 400 pages of FBI memo. (I would say she was a pretty important person for the FBI to have that many pages about you.) Writer's world--She talked about how she came to be an author and what inspired her to write about Louisa. Mrs. Bakke learned to love her country instead of fight with it when September 11, 2001 happened. She finished the session with reading a sample from her book and answering questions from a room full of students and professors.

My recording includes the sound of water from my kitchen sink, bathroom sink, and the shower tub. First part and the end of it is me doing the sound of water dripping with my mouth, then there are the sink water flowing and also draining. I tried to repeat some of the dripping and draining sounds which I thought was cool.

Andy Warhol and Kenny Goldsmith

Andy Warhol

What is this gift that Oprah received? I want one like just like it because it changed her life, maybe it will change my life as well. This simple device will eliminate all the clutter in my house. It is a library in the palm of my hands. Do I dispose my collection of magazines and newspapers and books when I get this Amazon Kindle. Some B should get me one or maybe two of them because my birthday is near. They should just get me one because I’m Andy Warhol. This is so the American way. Everything is about convenience. This is so convenient that going to the library or buying a newspaper or magazine you don’t have to go to the newsstand at the corner. I like to have many things. I know I can afford them now these days that I am a little well off. Back in the day, all of these are just dreams. I need some new pair of shoes, because mine are almost worn out. They don’t seem to have the exact same shoes I want, I want the Nike Air Max shoes but I don’t see it anywhere on this page. Should I go to the trouble of contacting somebody or maybe not it is just a waste of time. My feet still seem happy at the moment. Halloween is at the end of the week and I don’t have a costume yet. I have a few friends coming over at the Factory, some high profile names some are my long time friends and mainly the people who work there. Dress code is a costume and I don’t have one yet...ahhh! No time to freak out. If I can’t order anything here on Amazon.com, at this point I am not finding anything I like, I will just wear my usual gray wig and put on extra make-up to make myself look really-really old like a grandpa. I will draw never ending lines to resemble wrinkles on my face. Will I be a scary grandpa, I hope so. I wonder what the others will be wearing?

Thoughts on Andy Warhol book

Better reading than the Nadja book. Alot easier for me to comprehend and understand because it seems as if the language is the everyday spoken speech unlike the Nadja which is like foreign language even though it is written in English. There are plenty of good quotes. Some of them I try to interpret and explain, some I don't have any clue what it is about. The best section of the entire book is on Death. Only two sentences of reading. He does not believe in it that is why he did not spend to much effort writing about it. My take on death is that it is one of the constant in life. Believe it or not, we will all face it one of these days. It is something which we can face with uncertainty or something to look forward to. Death is sad, especially for the love ones we leave behind, but what I believe in is that it is something glorious to look forward to. What I mean is that, I will be with my Lord and Creator, with GOD of the universe up in Heaven. Heaven is the perfect place.
"My wife. My tape recorder and I have been married for ten years now."(Warhol p26) Why a tape recorder, why not the TV which he has a constant affair with, or even one of his many celebrity friends or regular friends. From what I understand is, he is content with a life of solitude or being a loner. Although he has plenty of friends and enjoy their company, the emotions or feeling of love is not there. I just believe that we are creatures created out of love and therefore we need to show or share love to others as well.
"People should fall in love with their eyes closed. Just close your eyes. Don't look."(Warhol p50) I think this is the same as the common phrase these days that 'Love is Blind.' When the love bug bites you there are many things that can't be explained. So just let love guide your way.
"...because I think just being alive is so much work at something you don't always want to do." (Warhol p96) I found this intriguing but don't really know any explanation for it.
In the section of Atmosphere where he talked about Rome where everything in Rome is so old, I totally agree with him on this. That was my exact impression Rome when I had the opportunity to visit there two years ago. Ruins after ruins was what went through my head as we toured the city. For an industrialized nation, everything was ancient looking. It was a great experience nonetheless.
I found the section of Art very comical because of the incident about 'nothing'. Andy and a friend B had a very lively discussion about nothing. "Everything is nothing." (Warhol p183) He totally stood by this even though B made really good points about how can everything be nothing. Andy explained it in ways it seemed to make sense to me, but then again it does not make sense. I don't know if I am making sense right now. This was one of the best parts I enjoyed in the book.
My last thoughts: We are all here on Earth for a special purpose, although we are all different and unique, we are by no means here by accident, what that purpose is on Earth/life is something we all have to discover for ourselves.

"News from Home"

1. What is the function of the letters in _News From Home_?
At first, I thought that the letters that were being read was just one in the same letter. I just kept hearing the lines "write as often as possible...we have not received a letter from you or heard from you...or I'm sorry I was not able write back to you the same day...". But as the movie went on, I was able to clearly make out some details of the other letters as she was reading them. "Congratulations on her new job...everyone is doing well...received a letter from the little girl". My thoughts on this is that from reading the letters from home are for her to gain strength and courage and to reconnect in a way with her loved ones back home that truly love her and care for her. She is new in the city of New York, trying to make it as an artist and possibly not able to easily find a way to make a living. She roams the city looking for work and at the same time trying to adjust to the new environment that is different from what she has known. So the letters I think give her that extra drive to go on and pursue her dreams as an artist. She wants to prove she can make it on her own but at the same time she still needs the support of her family. She did find a job and the last part of the film I saw seems like she is in a vehicle on her way to the new job.

WRITEon 1

This is a fun time with my dad. The day I’ve looked forward to for days and days and it finally came. My father is always so busy with work and has hardly any free time with. He made a promised to me that on his next day off, I would be able to spend the entire day with him. My dad all to myself. I did not really know what I wanted to do with my special day with my father. He suggested we go see the new exhibits at the downtown museum. I immediately jumped on board the idea, again just as long as I am alone with my dad on my special day. This is our time to make the best memories possible. As we explored the museum, there were so many awesome things to see and experience. Best thing I enjoyed was the stories my dad made up with each invidual exhibits we looked at. I did not care whether they were make believe or actual facts. I especially loved the stories he shared when he was a boy spending his time with father.

WRITEon 2

The unforgettable summer of 1956. Why is it so hot? Not a single breeze has passed the whole entire day. The usual yellow sun high up the sky seemed red today. The vastness of the blue sky, it looked like the oceans up in the heavens. I so wanted a relief from this sweltering heat. It is summer, but this weather is a bit unusual here. The weather people’s forecast is that there is no end in sight anytime soon. Beside the heat, I am so really looking forward to this camp with my church group. The thought of swimming in the lake, ahhhh I can’t wait. Some of my friends are going again this year, but some new friends I met last year are not able to come along this time.

WRITEon 3

I don’t know what I got myself into. This used to be so much fun but now it is consuming all of my time. Locked up in the dark basement of my work space, I hardly get out and even see my people friends let alone my true friends, the freest and most wonderful creatures on this planet that God has created. What is it that has a grip on me that I am not able to stop making these things. My creations number into the hundreds of making and esuring every detail of each piece is precisely like the real thing. The joy of creating a masterpiece of sort might be the reason that I am so caught up in this. I want to stop, I need to stop, please somebody help me, because I cannot let any of them go. These are my prized possessions they are worth too much to just…I don’t know what anymore. The friends the birds need to come and save me. I want to fly away free like them into the unknown or maybe as high as outer space.

Sign of the Times

These were being given out on Wall Street during the market slides. Wish I was there to get one.

LIGHT SCULPTURE - SITOOTERIE II

The directors of the National Malus Collection invited Heatherwick Studio to develop the design of the structure called the Sitooterie for their site in Essex. The structure is a cube punctured by over 5000 long thin windows that project from all its surfaces and lift it off the ground. The cube, which measures 2.4 x 2.4 metres, is precision-machined from 15mm anodised aluminium and the windows are 18mm square-section aluminium tubes glazed with transparent orange acrylic. As the long thin windows all point at the exact centre of the cube, it only takes a single light source, located at this central point, to send light through every tube, causing the windows to glow orange. A small number of them also project into the cube to form seating.
This is one of the coolest things I've seen.

Life is like....

Like life...(online poker with no real money involved) Texas Hold'em Poker on Facebook is a game of patience. You have to know when to play and when to fold. Life is full of choices. Sometimes you have to think about the possible outcomes of your decisions and sometimes you have to just throw in all your chips and risk it all. How this relates to my everyday life... instead of just watching other people live there own lives, I choose to take a seat at the table and live my life as well.

"Everyday Speech 1962"....Maurice Blanchot

“The everyday is human. The earth, the sea, forest, light, night, do not represent everydayness, which belongs first of all to the dense presence of great urban centres….The everyday is not at home in our dwelling places, it is not in offices or churches, any more than in libraries or museums. It is in the street—if it is anywhere.”(Johstone, p.39)
This passage from Blanchot’s essay, I take it as humans are more important than anything in this world even in this universe. Humans are the center of the universe. Everything revolves around humans. It is not to say that the earth and everything in it has no importance but all these have their roles. What I believe is that God has created everything and God has placed an order in all things. Before creating man on the sixth day, God prepared and created a world for man to live in first. God is in control of everything, and the everyday is made up of man being intertwined within the things of the earth.
I don’t agree with the fact that everyday is only the street. The everyday is everywhere, at home in our dwelling places or offices, schools or especially at churches. The fact that these places are where the majority of people of the world congregate and spend their time, minus the homeless people who reside on the streets, I disagree that the street is where everyday is. Just like the majority of the class I found this reading somewhat difficult.

quiet time

I decided to do my twenty minutes of doing nothing before I turned in for bed tonight Saturday September 27, or I mean midnight hours of Sunday September 28. As I sat in bed, trying not to think of things to do and just trying to keep my mind clear of different thoughts, the activities of the whole day Saturday kept going through my mind. My mind just went through a sort of a review of the whole day. The day started fairly late at about 10:30 in the morning because it is always difficult to get up early on Saturdays. After eating a bowl of oatmeal, I proceeded to do some household chores; washed last night’s dishes, fed the dogs, vacuumed, got our single resident ready for the day. The rest of the beautiful Saturday I enjoyed it in downtown Seattle hanging out with friends. Again, as much as I tried to keep my mind clear from thinking of anything it just went ahead and reviewed the day.

The body is somewhat tired and is easily keeping still from doing anything but the mind is still wide awake and can’t quite seem to keep “still.” For the remainder of my twenty minutes of nothing, I decided to have a conversation with God, a meditation/quiet time/prayer if you will. In a few short hours, I will be in his house again at church teaching our Sunday school youth class. As usual before going to bed, I would just converse with God, thanking and praising Him for who He is. Thanking Him for getting me through another day and for the good night’s rest and if He is so willing---also thanking Him for waking me up the next day and adding another day in my life.

Very interesting exercise of just taking twenty minutes and slowing yourself down. I am sleepy now…going to bed…good night all.
